Jason And The Argonauts (1963)

Rating: ****
Special Effects: Ray Harryhausen
Cast: Todd Armstrong, Honor Blackman

Probably Ray Harryhausen's finest work, this film takes a few liberties with Greek mythology to tell the story of Jason's quest for the golden fleece. In order to reclaim his father's kingdom, Jason must retrieve a magical golden fleece from a far away land. Luckily, he's got the goddess Hera on his side, and she grants him three requests which he takes advantage of in dire times of need. Jason assembles a legendary crew (including Hercules) and sets off for a series of fantastic adventures. The stop-motion work is incredible and this film features the most fantastic scene of its kind ever filmed - a dazzling sword fight between three men and seven animated skeletons! It's truly amazing. Lots of fun all around, and lots of cool monsters.
