This was my orginal holiday card concept for 2002, but I ran out of steam and never
quite got it to where I wanted it. I've never been good with smiles, and especially
open-mouthed ones, so the mouth was very challenging for me. I also couldn't
get the neck to work with her body, so I decided to go all artsy-fartsy and just make
it a disembodied head with a hand coming out of nowhere. For the most part, I
think it works and conveys the intentions properly. The computer coloring is the
most complex and severe shading I'd done to date, although in retrospect it could
certainly use a little more. I'm extremely happy with the gun, which used
35 masks and gradients to achieve the depth effect.
